With limited exceptions, most aliens must obtain a visa to enter the United States. A United States visa is an endorsement issued by the United States Department of State that permits an alien to enter the United States to perform activities allowed pursuant to the specific visa category.

The most common visa issued by the United States Department of State is the nonimmigrant visitor visa that takes the form of a B-1, Visitor for Business Visa or B-2, Visitor for Pleasure Visa. These visas are used so interchangeably that the United States Department of State officers generally issue a single combination B-1/B-2 visa.
